Focus on Hand Care

Your hands are on display on a daily basis, so it’s no surprise as to why you want them to look their best. However, considering how often you use them for everything from cleaning to typing to cooking, they can take quite a beating, so it’s good to give them a little extra TLC. There are certain habits to pick up and ones to avoid if you want your hands to look as fantastic as possible, and the following are some ideas for changes you can implement.

Don’t Cut the Cuticles
There have likely been many times that you went to get a manicure, your cuticles ended up getting cut off, and you may not have given it a second thought, but did you know that it’s one of the worst things you can do for your nails? The cuticles serve as a protective barrier, and when you cut that off, you’re essentially inviting a whole host of bacteria and dirt to make their way in there and leave yourself at risk for an infection. Whether you get a professional manicure or you do it at home, it’s best if you leave your cuticles as they are.

Don’t Bite Your Nails
Speaking of your fingernails, it’s a must that you avoid biting them and the skin around them. Your hands and under your nails are filled with dirt and germs and so is your mouth, and when you put your fingers in your mouth, you’re just transferring the dirt and germs back and forth. The bad habit is also not going to be good if you create some type of cut, not to mention what it’s going to do for the appearance of your hands in general.

Woman using sunscreen

Put on Sunscreen
Many tend to miss the hands when they apply sunscreen, but it’s important that you not neglect them. Not only do you not want a sunburn on your hands, but they’re also one of the first parts of your body to show your age, and the more sun exposure they encounter, the more likely you are to see sun spots, wrinkles, and other signs of aging on your skin.

Put on Hand Cream
From being exposed to cold weather to constant dish washing, your hands can get quite dry, itchy, tight, and uncomfortable which is why it’s a good idea to apply hand cream often, especially after they’re exposed to water. While you should focus on all areas of your hands, don’t forget on and all around your nails.

Frequently Wash Your Hands
You may be surprised how many people don’t wash their hands throughout the day even after going to the bathroom. It’s so important to frequently wash your hands often and do it well. Use warm water, a good antibacterial soap, and make sure to take your time and get every area of your hands including under your fingernails. You’ll also want to avoid touching the faucet or door handle with your now-clean hands. Carrying hand sanitizer with you – and actually using it – is also advantageous.

The more healthy habits you develop with your hands, the better they’re going to look and the more likely you are to have the type of healthy hands you desire. You’ll have to put in the effort, but the results can be worth it.
